Adrenocortical suppression in workers manufacturing synthetic glucocorticoids.

چکیده

A man who had worked for 16 years in the manufacture of a potent corticosteroid was found to be suffering from chronic adrenocortical insufficiency attributed to chronic absorption of the glucocorticoid. Eleven other symptom-free workers were therefore screened. Two of these workers, like the first patient, gave grossly abnormal responses to the Synacthen (tetracosactrin) test; one had been employed for only seven months. All 12 men had facial plethora, suggesting absorption of the drug in spite of their having adhered to the safety precautions. All workers manufacturing potent steroids should therfore be screened regularly by measurement of their plasma cortisol concentrations and should be moved regularly to processing other drugs.

Adrenocortical suppression in workers employed in manufacturing synthetic glucocorticosteroids: solutions to a problem.

Earlier studies showed gross adrenocortical suppression in three workers employed in manufacturing synthetic glucocorticoids. A further nine had either recognisable abnormalities of their responses to tetracosactrin or evidence of chronic skin contact with glucocorticoids. By 1978 the mean morning cortisol concentration of 20 workers employed in active steroid processes was 235 nmol/1 +/- 28.6 ...

Perioperative management of patients treated with glucocorticoids.

HPA suppression is a common consequence of glucocorticoid therapy, whereas overt secondary adrenal insufficiency is a rare but life-threatening condition. Prolonged hypotension and a response to adequate doses of a glucocorticoid agent are not reliable ways to assess adrenocortical function. One must also demonstrate plasma cortisol levels that are inappropriately low for the clinical situation...

Pituitary-adrenocortical response after craniotomy for brain tumor, and its suppression with administered glucocorticoid.

Nowadays large doses of glucocorticoids are administered to prever.t cerebral edema during and after craniotomy for brain tumor. The influence of this glucocorticoids therapy on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical response was studied clinically. Urinary total 17-hydroxycorticoids excretion ( 17-0H-CH) was estimated. Preoperative basal level of 17-0H-CS in brain tumor cases was lower than ...

DESCRIPTION CORTEF Tablets contain hydrocortisone which is a glucocorticoid. Glucocorticoids are adrenocortical steroids, both naturally occurring and synthetic, which are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Hydrocortisone USP is white to practically white, odorless, crystalline powder with a melting point of about 215° C. It is very slightly soluble in water and in ether; sparing...

Comparative adrenocortical suppression in dogs with otitis externa following topical otic administration of four different glucocorticoid-containing medications.

The safety of using otic formulations is often of concern for practitioners and pet owners alike, with "safe" in this context meaning no adrenocortical suppression. This study evaluated the effect of four glucocorticoid-containing otic formulations on plasma cortisol concentrations, measured by corticotropin stimulation testing (plasma cortisol concentrations before and after corticotropin inje...
